Whichever reason you don’t eat meat, be it for climate change, animal rights, or just plain ol’ preference, Prime Roots has the meat substitute for you. Using plant-based Koji meat, the aim is to make deli favorites that are free of soy, gluten, nitrate, and are non-GMO.

I received the sandwich making kit and fell in love with the packaging. From the dissolvable packing peanuts to the compostable sandwich box, I appreciated the sustainability aspect. The kit came with a loaf of Semifreddi’s ciabatta bread as well as plant-based condiments including chipotle sauce, stone mustard, mayonnaise, dressing, and Prime Roots’s Koji-Foie Gras. The Koji meats included were classic pepperoni, cracked pepper turkey, Black Forest ham, classic smoked turkey, and classic salami.

I created my sandwich using the bread, a slice of each meat, avocado, and the chipotle sauce. The meats have the same texture as regular meat – I was floored! Taste wise, the salami was my favorite as it was the most realistic. The others did not taste like meat to me. I also preferred that the chipotle sauce be a bit spicer, but it added nice flavor.
