Product Review: New Zealand Honey Company’s UMF™ 15+ Manuka Honey
Disclosure: I was given this honey in exchange for this post. All opinions here are my own.
I was never a honey person, but New Zealand Honey Company’s Manuka Honey may have changed my mind.
Deriving from New Zealand’s Leptospermum Scoparium tree, Manuka Honey is very rare. The tree itself is a finite resource and harvest time is exceptionally short. As well, the process to extract the honey is difficult.
That being said, the high price point of Manuka Honey may be deterring at first, but the payoff is 100% raw, unpasteurized honey from farmland free of herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides.
New Zealand Honey Company characterizes their honey with UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) and a number. The higher the number, the rarer that specific grade of honey is.
I tried their best seller UMF™ 15+ Manuka Honey and was pleasantly surprised.
The texture was smooth and not sticky like most kinds of honey. In fact, it appeared more liquid-like in comparison as well.
The packaging was sleek and made it easy to store. Plus, the lid is cleaner to close than the standard honey top as it functions like a jar, providing less build-up near the opening. The best part is the BPA-free plastic is 100% recyclable PETE 1.
The smell was pleasant, not overwhelming, and it did not taste saccharine, which is why I’m usually turned off by honey.
This honey blends nicely with smoothies and tastes great on summer fruit, such as peaches and mangoes (or, if you’re like me, straight out of the jar). The only downside is the price tag, but hey, you get what you pay for.
