I consider myself a pretty decent judge when it comes to hot sauce. I know which ones are great for entry-level spice foragers (Tobasco or Siracha) and of gems not yet available in stores (Tip: Chipotle’s homemade hot sauce is not just tasty on Chipotle). I also make a point to try new hot sauces whenever I dine out or travel.

So when I was emailed about trying hot sauce from Hot N Spicy, a Black-owned small batch company seen on Hot Ones, I was ecstatic. I chose Sweet Potato N Habanero because sweet potato is one of my favorite vegetables. In fact, I was fed so many carrots and sweet potatoes as an infant that I turned slightly orange and my parents thought I had jaundice, but that’s a story for another day.

The sauce itself is creamy, but not too thick. I do prefer sauces with a consistency like Cholula’s but will choose a higher spice level over texture any day. However, the creaminess did make it difficult pour out at first. But once it did, a TON spilled all over my food. Keep in mind there is no dropper on the opening.

I absolutely LOVED the spice level on this one. It has four out of five peppers as dictated on the front of the bottle. Taste-wise, there was the subtle sweetness of sweet potato and cinnamon chased with a spicy kick of habanero. I used this sauce on pretty much everything I ate but especially loved it on scrambled eggs and chicken.

Something to note: the ingredient panel said there are zero grams of sugar, but the sauce is indeed made with brown sugar. It is pretty far down on the ingredient list, so there actually may not be that much, if any at all. It was not, however, a deal breaker for me.

I am definitely curious about trying more flavors from Hot N Spicy.

Currently, there is Beet N Fresno, Garlic N Peperoncini, Black Garlic N Peri Peri, and Collards N Ghost. The question is, how fast will I go through the next one?
